RAWMATERIAL SUPPLIES
Cape Sawmills Pty Ltd process high quality Pine saw logs and veneer
logs (P. radiata and P. pinaster) for the manufacturing
of the different products.
Saw logs vary in length from 2.4-6.6 meter with a minimum thin end
diameter of 13cm. These logs are prepared to specifications taken into
account bow, crook, knots and dimensional requirements.
Veneer logs are logs of a high quality prepared from the pruned
section of the tree.
Currently the company's total need is sourced from within a radius
of 150 kilometers from Stellenbosch.
Suppliers of logs to Cape Sawmills Pty Ltd are:
MTO Forestry (Pty) Ltd.
MTO is the biggest supplier of logs to Cape Sawmills. Saw- and
Veneerlogs are supplied from various plantations namely Kluitjieskraal
near Wolseley, Jonkershoek near Stellenbosch, La Motte near Franschoek,
the Tokai plantation in the Cape Peninsula and the Grabouw plantation.
Municipalities
Logs are bought on a tender basis from the Stellenbosch
Municipality and the Cape Metropolitans Council's plantations at the
Steenbras- and Wemmershoek dams.
South African National Parks
Cape Sawmills is currently in a joint project with S.A.N.P. busy to
remove the Pine plantations from the Table Mountain National Park. The
harvesting and removal of the Pine trees are done with specialized
equipment in an environmentally friendly way.
Other private sources
The company buys in quality Pine logs from windbreaks and woodlots
from farms and other landowners in the area. These trees are in most
cases bought standing and logs are prepared by contractors, contracted
by the company, to the log specifications for the company's needs.
